ABOUT US

Katie Liu (‘22) had the idea for New Skylines tutoring in the spring of 2021. When she saw how vital English-proficiency is to succeed in the English-prejudiced workplace of the United States and yet how systemic inequalities leave already disadvantaged students struggling and with lesser opportunities to thrive due to factors out of their control, she mixed that desire to help with her own passion for language so that she could do something concrete. Then, she enlisted Olivia Wong (‘22) as co-president, and together they finalized New Skylines, driven by values of always seeking equity, the importance of education, breaking the cycle, and providing help wherever we are needed, wanted, and can. This is why the mission of New Skylines â€‹is what it is: in today’s society, lack of English proficiency is one of the biggest barriers to equal opportunity. Yet, access to the resources and opportunities necessary to acquire English proficiency is most scarce within underserved communities. Thus, New Skylines strives to support all young people in their journeys to English proficiency, because everyone -- regardless of their circumstances -- deserves access to the opportunities that English proficiency unlocks.

And, to highlight how New Skylines lives that mission through the work we do, we have a specific focus on ELL students, even as we welcome all students who need help with English.
